2013 Port Townsend Ferry Transfer Span
American Construction Company (ACC) won a contract to perform a replacement of an existing ferry transfer span for the Port Townsend, Washington community.
The project was to replace an outdated counterweight system with a new hydraulically driven transfer span. ACC conducted the demolition of an existing ferry transfer span and then reconfigured the structure with new construction and a new alignment to increase efficiency for the commuter population. ACC performed the demo and replacement of two 7 foot drill shaft which housed the two 250 ton rams required to lift the transfer span. Additionally, ACC drove 5 new bridge seat piles and then, due to proximity constraints, used a rare two crane 'pick' to lift the 170 ton transfer span and expertly set in place.
The project was completed successfully and fully met the needs and expectations of the Port Townsend community. ACC overcame numerous owner-driven constraints on this project yet through professional project management, met the timelines of the project to the satisfaction of the owner.
